The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, known as the WIC Program, is a free nutrition program that offers healthy food and nutrition advice to pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and children younger than 5.

It is a supplemental-food program that is federally funded through the USDA.

It provides:

  • Advice on improving your family’s health by choosing healthy foods.
  • Breastfeeding advice and support for pregnant women and new mothers.
  • Referrals to doctors, dentists, and other community services and programs that can help you and your family.
  • Checks to buy healthy foods, such as milk, cereal, cheese, eggs, and juice, at local stores.

WIC helps families with moderate and low incomes, even a family of four earning as much as $34,873 a year. Families on RIte Care or Katie Beckett also may qualify.

WIC is for:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • Mothers with infants under six months old
  • Infants
  • Children under age 5
  • Fathers, grandparents, and foster parents can also apply for WIC for the children in their care.

Providence Community Health Centers' WIC programs are the largest in Rhode Island, serving more than 8,380 individuals in the Greater Providence area. The WIC program is operated at each of the four PCHC health centers and has a bilingual staff to help meet the needs of our constituents.
