Paula Slinko is latest recipient fo DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses

Paula Slinko, BSN-RN, was recognized as our most recent Daisy Award honoree at a surprise ceremony on May 6. Paula has been a nurse in our Asthma and Allergy clinic since joining PCHC almost two years ago. She said the most rewarding part of her job is “undoubtedly the opportunity to serve the underserved, ensuring every patient feels valued, respected, and genuinely cared for.”

“I’ve had the privilege of cultivating deep, trusting relationships, especially with patients who rely on consistent care like biweekly injections for their asthma and hives,” said Paula. “To hear so many tell us that these vital medications and our dedicated team’s ongoing follow-up have ‘saved their life’ is a truly heartfelt and humbling testament to the direct, life-changing impact we make.”

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses is a national program started by a family that wanted to recognize the great nursing care their loved one received. Paula was nominated by several patients and co-workers.

“Paula has been an integral part of our clinic for the past two years, and her contributions to our team are truly invaluable,” said Dr. Mansi James, whose care team includes Paula. “Despite having no prior experience with asthma and allergy patients, she immediately stepped into her role with dedication and compassion. Paula consistently demonstrates exceptional patient care; she is an attentive listener, takes the time to thoroughly engage with each individual, and brings a level of empathy and commitment that sets her apart.”

As the DAISY winner, Paula receives a beautifully handcrafted statue called “The Healer’s Touch” which symbolizes the relationship between nurses, patients, and families, a framed certificate, and a check.

“Paula is an exceptional nurse who consistently goes above and beyond for her patients,” said her colleague Nicole Useta Mateo, HCA. “She provides care with love, compassion, and empathy, making her patients heard, valued and supported. I believe she deserves to be recognized for the outstanding work she does every day.”

About her co-workers, Paula said, “I am profoundly grateful for the team I work with; I simply wouldn’t be the nurse I am today without them. They demonstrate exceptional dedication and diligence daily, embodying the truth that it takes a ‘village’ to deliver truly exceptional, patient-centered care. Their unwavering support is consistently demonstrated whether we’re navigating a complex clinical situation or simply managing a busy day, making their presence truly indispensable.”

Congratulations to Paula on this well-deserved recognition!
